Open-frame server racks: 2-post and 4-post

An open-frame rack is a 19-inch mounting frame with no doors or side panels. A 2-post frame holds patch panels and switches; a 4-post frame supports deeper, heavier equipment such as servers. They suit locked server and comms rooms where the room itself provides security. XG Labs quotes open-frame racks on request.

When an open-frame rack makes sense

  • A locked server or comms room with controlled access.
  • High-density patching where engineers move cables often.
  • Rooms with good room-level cooling, where open airflow helps.
  • Integrator and MSP staging areas and test labs.

If the rack sits in an office, a shared floor or a dusty area, choose a lockable cabinet instead: a wall-mount rack for small networks or a 42U floor-standing cabinet for servers.

Accessories for open frames

Vertical and horizontal cable managers, patch panels, shelves, rack PDUs and grounding kits are quoted with the frame. See rack accessories. For network rooms that connect on-site equipment to cloud services such as Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure, we can quote the switches and firewalls with the frame too.

Frequently asked questions

What is an open-frame rack used for?

Open-frame racks hold network and server equipment in rooms that are already secured. They are common for patching in comms rooms, telco and ISP spaces, and labs where engineers need quick access to cables.

2-post or 4-post open-frame rack?

Choose 2-post for patch panels, switches and other light, shallow equipment. Choose 4-post when you need to mount servers, storage or a rack UPS on rails, because the load is supported front and back.

Open frame or enclosed cabinet?

Choose open frame in a locked room where cable access and airflow matter most. Choose an enclosed cabinet in offices, shared spaces or anywhere the equipment needs its own lock and dust protection.

What sizes do you supply?

Open-frame racks are quoted on request. Tell us the U height, post type and the equipment to be mounted, and we confirm the size and specification on the quotation.
