Small, mini and wall-mount server racks for offices

A wall-mount server rack is a small, lockable 19-inch cabinet fixed to the wall, for switches, patch panels, a firewall and a small UPS where there is no room for a floor cabinet. XG Labs lists a 12U (600 × 450 × 640 mm) and an 18U deep (600 × 600 × 1000 mm) wall-mount cabinet; other small sizes are quoted on request.

Choosing a small rack for an office

  • Count the U: a 24-port switch and a patch panel are 1U each; add a cable manager between them, a 1U shelf for the router and 1–2U for a small UPS.
  • Check depth: 450 mm suits switches and patch panels; 600 mm gives room for a firewall, NVR or UPS and the cables behind them.
  • Plan power: a small rack PDU and, for critical links, a compact UPS.
  • Keep it cool: a roof fan helps when the cabinet sits in a closed store room or ceiling space.
  • Wall and access: mount on a solid wall at a height your team can service, with the door free to open.

Networking hardware for the cabinet, such as TP-Link switches and access points and Fortinet FortiGate firewalls, can go on the same quotation. Offices that run most services in Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Google Cloud often only need this small rack on site for the internet link, firewall and switches.

Need something bigger?

For servers, storage or a growing comms room, see the 42U server rack, or read rack server vs server rack to size it. Secure rooms that don't need doors can use an open-frame rack.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest server rack you supply?

Our listed wall-mount cabinets are 12U (600 × 450 × 640 mm) and 18U (600 × 600 × 1000 mm). Smaller mini racks such as 6U or 9U are quoted on request, and availability is confirmed on the quotation.

Is a wall-mount rack enough for an office?

For a typical office network (switches, patch panels, a firewall, a router and a small UPS) a 12U or 18U wall-mount cabinet is usually enough. If you plan to add rack servers, choose a floor-standing rack instead.

12U or 18U: which wall-mount rack should I choose?

Choose 12U (450 mm deep) for switches and patch panels. Choose the 18U (600 mm deep) when you need more depth for a firewall, NVR, small UPS or extra cable room, or expect the network to grow.

Can a wall-mount rack hold a server?

We don't recommend it. Most rack servers are deeper and heavier than a wall cabinet is designed for. Use a 24U or 42U floor-standing rack for servers.

Do you install wall-mount racks?

No. We supply the cabinet and accessories. Wall fixing, assembly and cabling are done by your own team or contractor, who should confirm the wall can carry the loaded cabinet.
